Learning Outside the Classroom
American Red Cross Training and Instructor
I am involved in teaching and training candidates of Lifeguarding and Water Safety Instructor for the American Red Cross. I have been a Lifeguard since 1996 and a Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) since 2001 and a Lifeguard Instructor Trainer (LGIT) in 2008. I started teaching Water Safety (swim lessons) classes as a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) in 1997 and became an Water Safety Instructor Trainer (WSIT) in 2003. I have used my expertise to teach many candidates the important lifesaving skills of First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding. I have done this both as a volunteer and as a manager of swimming facilities. I have been able to help bring these skills to rural areas that have been underserved due to their remoteness.
During the 2002 Winter Olympics I was a Team Leader at American Red Cross First Aid Stations throughout Salt Lake City and Park City. I have continued to volunteer for the American Red Cross in multiple capacities, from First Aid Stations during events to acting as Chairperson for the Water Safety Committee in the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter. I have learned many things and gained great experiences and confidence as I have both taught and volunteered for the American Red Cross.

Competitive Swim Coaching and Board Member
As a charter member of the Layton Surfers Swim Team’s Board of Directors I am working directly with the team president and owner to improve the coaching, organization and communication of the team. I am currently serving as the Secretary for the Board of Directors.
I have served as the Technical Planning Chair for Utah Swimming, the governing body of competitive swimming in the state of Utah. in this capacity, I planned and coordinated yearly competitive swim schedule for 30 Utah Swimming clubs, conducted regular committee meetings, wrote legislation, established events schedule for spring and summer championships, organized 65 volunteers as timers, hospitality, officials, runners, safety marshals and others throughout five-day, 12-state competition attended by over 1100 swimmers. I was able to gain better understanding of the importance of planning, compromising and working with many people to create a great experience for everyone involved in competitive swimming. I have used the skills I gained from this role in both the work environment and at school during group projects. I am much more organized due to this experience.
I have coached swimming both for USA Swimming teams and at the High School level since 1998. I coached with the Layton Surfer Swim Team from 1998 to 2008. I have also coached the Fairmont Aquatic Center Penguins and currently coaching for the Wasatch Front Fish Market. I coached Layton High School's boys and girls swim teams for 1999 to 2006 and Highland High School's boys and girls swim teams from 2009 to 2010. I have had great opportunities to continue to learn about competitive swimming and physiology of the human body through many training courses and clinics. I have attended clinics and training courses throughout the Western United States, including: Utah, Arizona, California and Colorado. These classes have not only helped me to be a better coach, but also a better student and I am better prepared for the classes I will need to succeed in becoming a Physical Therapist Assistant and later a Physical Therapist.

Observations at Meier and Marsh Professional Therapies
A great thank you to Wade Meier and staff at Meier and Marsh Professional Therapies for allowing me to do 20 hours of observation at an amazing Physical Therapy Clinic! Wade was helpful, answering all my questions. He stimulated the learning experiences I was having in the classroom in PTA 1010. He was always courteous. Wade showed me many modalities of Physical Therapy. He gave me great insight into what to expect in Physical Therapy school and the profession.
I have continued to volunteer at Meier and Marsh Professional Therapies. I have completed 125 hours there over the past two years. I have gleaned many rewarding experiences and insights along the way.
